Brrrr! The first cold nip of Autumn is definitely in the air. As the season changes and we reach for our warm jumpers and think about firing up our central heating, warm and hearty meals become a family priority. Soups make a wonderfully warming and nutritious meal to ward off the chill of Autumn. The Vegetarian Society provides a comprehensive list of which vegetables are in season at this time of year (and all year round). Using vegetables in your soups that are in season will give the freshest taste and are richest in vitamins and minerals. Check out your local farmers markets and farm shops to see what is available. Many companies also exist to deliver fresh seasonal vegetables straight to your door.

- Red Pepper, Chilli and Tomato Soup

2. Curried Leek and Potato Soup
Only five ingredients are needed for this delicious soup courtesy of Del – perfect for keeping things fresh and simple and looking after your budget too. Hearty, traditional leek and potato soup meets curry for a warming twist.
3. Beef and Vegetable Soup
Using three seasonal vegetables (carrot, celery and potato), along with some hearty stewing beef and this soup is a meal in itself. The fact that it’s called ‘Fall Apart Beef’ in the recipe gives a hint of how deliciously melt in the mouth this soup is. You’ll have to read the recipe to find the extra secret ingredient…!
4. Roast Pumpkin and Ginger Soup
Well, we couldn’t let this time of the year go by without giving you a way to use up all that orange flesh scraped out of your Halloween pumpkins, could we? Using perfectly seasonal vegetables and providing a warming sensation with the addition of ginger, this soup is perfect for a Bonfire Night gathering.
5. Pea and Ham Soup
Beautifully vibrant and hearty, in-season peas added to some chunks of ham are a marriage made in heaven in this traditional soup from BBC Good Food. The colour of this soup is perfect for a spooktacular starter for a Halloween dinner party!
6. Chicken and Vegetable Soup
With coughs and colds appearing in earnest this year, chicken soup is often the go-to soup for comfort food when feeling a little under the weather. This chicken soup recipe uses seasonal vegetables, such as celery, onions and vitamin-rich carrots along with hearty pieces of chicken, in a chicken broth. This can be made warmer with the addition of chilli, if you prefer a little extra spice.
