Owner Occupation and Private Renting


 

  • After a decade of decline, the proportion of 25–34 year olds in owner occupation is now equal to the proportion in the private rented sector across England.
  • 727,000 first-time buyers acquired keys to their first home in the year to March 2019. The average age of a first-time buyer is 32 years outside of London and 37 years in the capital.
  • On par with a year ago, 45% of all first-time buyers obtained a 30+ year mortgage. In 2018/2019, 85% used savings to help fund their deposit, up from 76% in the previous year.
  • Over the past year 43,000 first-time buyers benefitted from the Government’s Help to Buy Equity loan scheme available on new-build properties across England, with close to 1,500 using it across Wales.
